The Christmas tree, firecrackers and tinsel pose a danger to pets. On December 21, the zoopsychologist Ksenia Ofitserova told Komsomolskaya Pravda how to prepare pets for a safe New Year celebration.
With regards to firecrackers, which dogs are so afraid of, the specialist clarified that only those animals that have a weak nervous system are afraid of their clapping. That is, it does not depend on the breed or on the size of the dog, the expert explained.
In the event that the dog is naturally nervous, shy, its owner should show it to a neurologist who will prescribe a sedative medication for the pet.
“It is better to try the prescribed medication a few days before the holiday – suddenly it will cause an allergy,” she said.
According to her, such special products for calming the nervous system of the animal are sold in veterinary pharmacies.
“They work as a fumigator against mosquitoes – the device is plugged into an outlet and the vapor of the sedative is sprayed into the air. However, ordinary essential oils also work well, not synthetic, but natural ones, ”the expert clarified.
They can be sprayed into the dog’s room or dripped onto the upholstery to help the scent soothe the animal, she added.
In addition, she added that for this reason, you should not go out with the dog on New Year’s Eve.
“Don’t take her with you when you go to see the fireworks,” the expert said.
While there is still time before the New Year, you can try to accustom your pet to loud sounds so that he gets used to them and stops being afraid, the specialist advised.
So, you can record the sounds of fireworks or shots from some action movie on your phone and let your dog listen to them every day. In this case, at first, the sound should be made completely quiet, and then gradually increase the volume, so that gradually the animal stops paying attention to harsh sounds.
In addition to firecrackers, a Christmas tree decorated with toys is also fraught with danger. Therefore, the zoopsychologist advises to isolate the animal as much as possible from the territory where it is located.
But if the animal can easily climb on cabinets and tables, it is worth abandoning the classic Christmas tree in the New Year and simply attaching the fir branches to the wall, decorating with balls.
“If you don’t want to give up the Christmas tree, then the tree itself and the toys can be sprayed with products that smell unpleasant for animals,” the expert advised.
In order for the cats not to jump after the shiny Christmas-tree balls, you need to prefer matte Christmas toys, and completely abandon the rain.
“The sharp edges of the foil can cut the insides of the animal,” the zoopsychologist clarified.
Also, according to the expert, it is necessary to warn guests in advance that you cannot feed the pet. And before sitting down at the festive table, give the pet something to chew on, for example, a “bone” made of thick dried skin, or a toy filled with goodies.
On November 22, cynologist Vladimir Golubev spoke about the dangers for dogs at home. According to him, these include: indoor plants, household chemicals, medicines and fruits.
