Five servicemen were hit by an avalanche in the Roki tunnel on the border with South Ossetia. This was reported in the Unified Duty Dispatch Service (EDDS).
The avalanche descended on the carriage, in which there were five soldiers. According to Interfax, three people were removed from under the snow blockages, and two more are being searched for. The staff of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and doctors work on the spot.
As the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted in an interview with Izvestia, the incident did not occur on the territory of Russia. The department was unable to clarify the identity of the servicemen.
As Interfax was told in the emergency department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of South Ossetia, two avalanches covered the building in which there were Russian soldiers guarding the Roki tunnel.
“The details are being specified, rescuers, ambulances and other services have arrived at the scene of the emergency,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
It is clarified that three of the five servicemen were removed from the avalanche, and two more are being searched.
The state of the people removed from the avalanche is still unknown.
The day before, on December 21, the Ministry of Emergency Situations in North Ossetia reported that traffic on the Transcaucasian highway connecting South Ossetia with Russia was prohibited from 10:00 Moscow time on December 20 due to the threat of avalanches.
In addition, from 19:30 Moscow time on December 19, 2021, the movement of all types of vehicles on the Georgian Military Highway remains prohibited.
The Transcaucasian Highway is the only road connecting Russia and South Ossetia. Its length is 164 km, the main part of the route passes through the highlands.
Earlier, on December 1, rescuers warned of avalanches in three districts of Kolyma. Emergencies at the municipal level may arise in the vicinity of Magadan, in the south of the Tenkinsky, Khasynsky urban districts. They will be caused by snow blockages, damage to buildings, communication lines and power transmission lines, injuries and deaths, disruption of road transport, injuries to athletes, hunters and tourists, the regional center of the Ministry of Emergencies warned.
