The Basmanny Court granted the investigator’s petition to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention against the rector of the Kazan Federal University (KFU) Ilshat Gafurov, he was arrested for two months. This was reported on December 22 in the press service of the court.

The rector was charged with incitement and preparation for murder (part 4 of article 33, part 1 of article 30, part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), as well as incitement to murder (part 4 of article 33, part . 2, article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy for mercenary motives.
It is noted that the defense petition for the election of a preventive measure not related to detention in respect of Gafurov was rejected.
On December 22, Gafurov was detained and taken by plane to Moscow. His case is being dealt with by investigators from the central office of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.
The KFU rector was charged with contract murder. As the head of the criminal practice of BMS Law Firm, lawyer Alexander Inoyadov, told Izvestia, complicity in hired murder carries a penalty of 8 to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
Member of the Russian Lawyers’ Association Asiya Mukhamedshina, in turn, also noted that Gafurov could face up to 20 years in prison.
Later, it also became known that a possible victim of Gafurov accused him of an attempt on his life back in 1999. According to the archival video, Yelabuga deputy, businessman Aydar Israfilov spoke about the alleged author of the unsuccessful attempt on his life. According to him, it was Gafurov.
