Collective
If this national team has proven one thing in the past few months, it is that the collective always comes before the individual. It is not the first time that the ÖFB selection has had to make do without David Alaba in a top game. With Xaver Schlager, it at least helps that there is the greatest concentration of top players in the center. No matter how painful these two failures – as well as that of goalkeeper Alex Schlager – may be, team boss Ralf Rangnick and his support staff will develop a good plan to get the most out of the current circumstances. Of course, none of this guarantees success. But that wouldn’t be any different with David Alaba and Co.

setbacks
The injuries to Xaver Schlager and Alexander Schlager were two setbacks for Austria’s national soccer team on the way to the European Championship. Yes, the choice between a fit Alexander Schlager and the now likely European Championship goalkeeper Patrick Pentz is perhaps a matter of taste. Yes, there are strong alternatives to Xaver Schlager, especially in central midfield. But it is definitely a weakening if team boss Ralf Rangnick doesn’t have two absolute regular players available.
Rangnick will field eleven strong Austrians. But now telling yourself that it doesn’t make a difference if David Alaba, Sasa Kalajzdic, Xaver Schlager and Alexander Schlager are out is a foul against the sense of reality.
