The MC-21-300 aircraft with a wing made of Russian composites made its first flight. This was reported on December 25 by the state corporation “Rostec”.
“Today the MC-21-300 aircraft, the wing of which is made of Russian-made polymer composite materials, made its first flight. The liner took off from the airfield of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, a branch of the Irkut company (part of the UAC of the Rostec State Corporation). The flight took place in normal mode, ”the message says.
According to test pilot, Hero of Russia Roman Taskaev, the flight mission was completed, and all systems were operating normally.
Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov noted that the first flight of an aircraft with a wing made of Russian composites proves that the MC-21 program “is consistently and steadily moving forward, despite sanctions and unfair competition.”
He also said that a composite wing for two aircraft has already been manufactured, and a third set is being manufactured at the moment.
“We plan to receive changes to the type certificate regarding the composite wing made of Russian materials in the second half of 2022,” Manturov said.
Earlier, on December 16, the MC-21-300 airliner performed its first training flight. The airliner took off from Zhukovsky airport and, having covered more than 4 thousand km, landed in Irkutsk. The crew tested the reliability of the engines, functional systems and equipment of the standard-design airliner in the conditions of further operation.
On December 14, the NTI Competence Center “Technologies for Modeling and Development of Functional Materials with Specified Properties” informed Izvestia that testing of materials that are planned to be used in the MS-21 passenger aircraft will be completed by the end of this year. The main purpose of the tests is to test materials for fire resistance and other fire safety characteristics.
MS-21-300 / 310 is a new generation medium-range aircraft with a capacity of 163 to 211 passengers. Its key feature is the composite wing.
At present, certification of the MC-21-300 aircraft is nearing completion, and it is planned to start delivering it to the airline in 2022. At the same time, the MS-21-310 aircraft with the new Russian PD-14 engine is undergoing flight tests.
