The most dangerous entertainment on New Year’s Eve is the use of faulty garlands, decorative candles and pyrotechnics. On December 26, Andrey Ivanov, Deputy Head of the Moscow Department for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Fire Safety (GOChSiPB), spoke about this.
“During the New Year holidays, lighted decorative candles, Christmas tree garlands, faulty lighting devices, left unattended, can cause a fire. Pyrotechnics, which are actively used these days, also have a high fire hazard, ”he told RIA Novosti.
According to the expert, more than 70% of the total number of fires in Moscow occurs in the residential sector, and the main reason is careless handling of the fire.
Another common cause of fires is overloading the power grid due to neglected heating appliances.
Talking about how to protect yourself from such incidents, Ivanov advised buying a fire extinguisher and installing a smoke detector in the apartment. In addition, there is no need to burn pyrotechnics indoors, and homemade sparklers should be used away from curtains and flammable materials.
The expert recalled that pyrotechnics can be used only at a distance from residential buildings and public spaces. Also, when buying pyrotechnics, you must ask for a certificate of conformity, he pointed out.
Ivanov emphasized that to launch fireworks, one should not go to city water bodies: even at the established subzero temperatures, the ice in some places can be very weak.
Earlier, on December 23, Viktor Samoshin, vice-president of the Moscow Pyrotechnic Association, said that pyrotechnics should be bought only in proven specialized stores. He also added that when using pyrotechnics, it is important to act in accordance with the instructions. In this regard, Samoshin recalled that Russia has a strict fireworks certification system.
