Today, the natural environment we live in and depend on faces many interrelated threats such as climate change, nature loss, water scarcity and pollution. World Recycling Day was established by UNESCO in 2005 as an opportunity to remember at a global level the strategy of reduce, reuse and recycle. The anniversary seeks to reorient and deconstruct the consumer behaviors of societies to avoid the indiscriminate extraction of natural resources as raw materials and improve the quality of our environment.
As a leading global food company, our purpose is to provide healthy food to as many people as possible while taking care of the planet. Specifically in 2023 we presented our sustainability strategy “Danone Impact Journey”, where we established ambitious goals in 3 axes: Health through food; Preservation and regeneration of the environment; and People and communities.
One of our objectives is to lead the development of effective and inclusive collection systems to recover and recycle all the plastic we use by 2040, in addition to increasing the use of recycled material in its packaging or the use of renewable materials. As far as plastic recycling is concerned, we have been working for more than 13 years with Fundación Avina on an inclusive recycling program called “Programa Recoverers”, with the aim of increasing recycling rates in Argentina, empowering the recycling ecosystem, professionalizing and recognizing the important role that urban recovery cooperatives have.
In 2023, we expand the scope of the program, in coordination with the Danone Ecosystem investment fund, the Avina Foundation and the Inter-American Foundation. Thus, we increased the number of cooperatives with which we work, reaching 56 cooperatives in 47 cities in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Entre Ríos, La Pampa, Santa Fe and Río Negro, impacting more than 6,582 urban reclaimers and recovering 280 tons/month of PET and .
In environmental matters we had great achievements in 2023. In our transition towards a circular packaging system with low carbon emissions, At Danone Argentina we have already achieved 95% of our packaging are recyclable or reusableand reducing the use of virgin plastic by 8%.
Today, consumers expect companies to do relevant things, to work as agents of change to have healthier habits with the planet. As a B Corp company, our brands share the purpose of having a favorable impact on the health of the population with our products, providing social value in an environmentally friendly way.
