Free Bim in Linz: A good idea?

Free Bim in Linz: A good idea?

Bim driving should be free on Saturdays.

Busy city center

Although it is not a new attempt: the free tram on Saturdays certainly helps to attract people from the full shopping centers back to Linz’s city center. There are always reports of vacancies on Landstrasse, and a free public transport connection on busy Saturdays could be an argument for some shops to venture into the city center. Short frequencies, hardly any waiting times, fast progress – and even in rainy weather, you attract eager weekend shoppers to a shopping trip in the city.

We’ll see how the project develops by Christmas. It’s definitely worth a try – even if not a new one.

CONS

If so, then good

Free tram on Saturdays along the country road? At first glance that sounds good, but then it quickly becomes clear: That’s not enough. Hardly anyone will pay for the journey from Kleinmünchen to the main train station in order to then be able to travel two more stations for free. Even fewer people will therefore move their shopping from the shopping center to the country road.

In order to really bring new customers to the city, you have to increase the quality of stay, improve the mix of industries and make shopping an experience. Free public transport can help, but only if it applies throughout the city, so that the journey to the city center becomes more attractive and more people leave their cars behind.
