Switch off!

Of course, it’s bitter for Gigi D’Agostino: Without the Italian DJ lifting a finger, his hit was suddenly vilified, made headlines – and to top it all off, countless radio stations around the world removed the song from their playlists, which meant the musician lost even more income.

But on the other hand: what would be the alternative? Should we continue to give the New Right a platform to shout their racist and inhumane slogans to the crowd? Maybe even at the European Football Championship? Sorry, Signore D’Agostino, but a song like that has no place on the radio or at a major event. There’s only one thing that helps here: switch off.

Doesn’t help

Racism, xenophobia and the reprehensible ideology of old and neo-Nazis cannot be attributed to a single happy song. History has shown us that catchy tunes with seemingly harmless lyrics are a great way to manipulate people. “L’amour toujours” has no claim to evil lyrics, but it is catchy.

Censorship is useless because the posh right-wingers are unlikely to comply with it or will simply blare their reprehensible messages to another song. The singer’s anger over the ban on some stations is understandable. Unfortunately, Mr. D’Agostino did not make it sufficiently clear that he finds xenophobia and racism disgusting.
