A brief review of the 2021 wine year

If the parameters for the winter dormancy, the growth phase and the maturity phase are correct, then you can always expect a great vintage. And it was (finally again) an optimal phase of hibernation. At Willi Bründlmayer’s top winery in Langenlois, it was still believed in mid-March that a cool spring is good for the vines. After the somewhat long winter dormancy, the unusually slightly delayed budding began. Fortunately, late frost was not an issue this spring. The already mentioned rainy phases in midsummer ensured optimal acid values. These are particularly promising values for optimal storage potential for Riesling, which ripens a little later, and also for Grüner Veltliner in the reserve area. Unfortunately there was some damage from the hail in some parts of the Wachau. Bad for those vintners who got it, despite everything, the storm damage was limited. The entire Danube region enjoyed the best conditions in the crucial autumn ripening phase. Sunny, dry and cool autumn weather allowed the grapes to stay on the vines for a long time, which meant that perfect physiological ripeness was achieved. The consequence of this means wines with a strong character and the already mentioned long storage potential. And according to old winemaking wisdom, you only praise a vintage when the last grapes are in the cellar. And according to old taster wisdom, you don’t have to rush to use the word century vintage, but at least 2021 is one of the great vintages.
