Russian President Vladimir Putin granted the citizenship of the country to a former employee of the US State Department, ex-adviser to US President Ronald Reagan, Susanne Massy. The corresponding decree was published on the official portal of legal information on Thursday, December 30.
“Adopt the following persons into the citizenship of the Russian Federation … Massie Suzanne Rohrbach, who was born on January 8, 1931 in the United States of America,” the document says.
Another 27 people received Russian passports at the same time.
On May 16, it became known that a former employee of the US State Department, author of several books, Susanne Massy, during her visit to Moscow, announced her desire to obtain Russian citizenship. According to her, if Russian President Vladimir Putin finds such an opportunity, it will be an honor for her.
The diplomat noted that she has worked for many years to bring the peoples of Russia and the United States closer together and intends to continue her work. To do this, she needs to stay in the Russian Federation, communicating with journalists in Russian.
Massy from 1984 to 1988 was Reagan’s adviser on the Soviet Union. She was nicknamed “The Woman Who Stopped the Cold War.” From 1985 to 1997, she worked as a Research Fellow at the Harvard Center for Russian Studies.
Massy took part in the preparation of the meetings between Reagan and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva and Reykjavik in 1985-1986. It was Massy who taught Reagan to pronounce the proverb “trust but verify” in Russian.
