Prices for flights within the Russian Federation on New Year’s holidays soared by 20-100%

In the last days before the New Year, the average cost of air tickets to the most popular Russian cities for travel during the January holidays soared by 20-100% compared to the same period last year. This follows from the research provided to Izvestia by the Kupibilet service.

Travel-tech service analysts analyzed data on “impulsive” purchases of air tickets to Russian and foreign destinations a few days before the New Year and compared them with last year.

The results are presented taking into account the late (from 20 to 29 December) flight bookings for the January holidays in 2021 compared to the same booking period in 2020.

Among the 10 most popular cities for travel on January holidays, the average one-way air ticket price for late booking increased the most in Rostov-on-Don – by 107% (up to 7.4 thousand rubles). The average check for flights to Yekaterinburg increased by 75% (up to 7.3 thousand), by 60% (up to 6.7 thousand) – to St. Petersburg, by 57% (to 7.4 thousand) – to Simferopol , by 56% – to Krasnodar (up to 6.9 thousand) and Moscow (6 thousand). In Kazan, the average price tag increased by 52% (to 6.1 thousand), in Kaliningrad – by 38% (6.4 thousand), Novosibirsk – by 20% (to 7.2 thousand) and in Sochi – by 19 % (5.4 thousand).

The average bill for a round-trip ticket grew most of all in Krasnodar – by 96% (up to 15.6 thousand rubles), in Yekaterinburg – by 83% (13.9 thousand), St. Petersburg – by 64% ( 11.4 thousand), Moscow – by 61% (10.6 thousand), Novosibirsk – by 58% (16.1 thousand), Rostov-on-Don – by 52% (11.9 thousand). In Simferopol, the average cynic rose by 31% (to 13.2 thousand), in Sochi – by 19% (12.2 thousand).

“In general, we can note a decrease in the tourist flow for travel in almost all domestic directions in 2021 compared to 2020” during the January holidays, Izvestia was told in the Kupibilet service.

The popularity of flights on New Year’s holidays to Moscow fell by 35%, in Sochi – by 31%, Yekaterinburg – by 26%, Krasnodar – by 67%, Simferopol – by 58%, Kaliningrad – by 48%, Kazan – by 61%, Novosibirsk – by 50% and to Rostov-on-Don by 76%.

One of the reasons for the decline in the popularity of travel within Russia may be the availability of a larger number of foreign destinations compared to the same period in 2020, Kupibilet said.

“Only St. Petersburg managed to maintain the tourist flow at about the same level, increasing it by 2%, even despite the increase in ticket prices by more than 60%,” – said the service representative.

The most popular countries for travel on the January holidays are Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, the United Arab Emirates, Belarus, Egypt, Cyprus and Hungary. Air traffic to the last three countries was closed a year ago. The popularity of trips fell only to Turkey, by 38%. There, the average cost of air tickets also increased: one way by 1.9 times (up to 11.5 thousand rubles), round-trip – by 25% (up to 20 thousand). In the rest of the listed countries, the average check has decreased compared to last year.
