The bell tower of the Nicholas Cathedral of the XIX century in the city of Kalyazin, Tver region, flooded in the 1940s during the construction of the Uglich reservoir, was opened to the public after restoration. The regional administration announced this on its website.
As the local authorities reminded, the object is interesting for tourists and historians, it remains a symbol of the spiritual heritage of the Tver region.
“It is important to preserve this unique building for future generations,” stressed the regional governor Igor Rudenya.
During the restoration, specialists strengthened the foundation, restored the facades and interiors, elements of white stone, from which, in particular, all cornices are made on all six tiers of the bell tower.
The clock and the cross were restored, the bell ringing system was automated. The power supply and architectural lighting systems were updated, the territory was landscaped.
The bell tower of the Nicholas Cathedral in Kalyazin was built in 1800-1801. In 1940, the Volgostroi project was approved, which provided for the artificial expansion of the Volga, the creation of hydroelectric power plants. The old part of Kalyazin was in the flooded zone, the cathedral was dismantled. The bell tower served as a lighthouse.
On December 30, specialists received the bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral in Pskov after the first stage of restoration work. The first stage of work on the bell tower and in the powder rooms has now been completed. The builders have strengthened the lower part of the structure. The cost of the work is estimated at 22 million rubles.
