Political dispute over the Knowledge Economy agenda

In the Computer Union We understand that the knowledge economy is one of the few state policies that have been successfully maintained in our country since the promulgation of the software law. This legal framework has been fundamental to promote the growth of the sector, which, thanks to the drive of the private sector and the technical capital of our workers, has grown steadily in recent years.

We are at a crucial moment for the development of our economy, and we believe that any discussion on the knowledge economy agenda must take into account national interests. The creation of quality, well-paid work is essential for the sustainable development of our country, and it is our responsibility to ensure that policies and actions in this area are oriented towards that end.

It is important to highlight that the administrations should stop trying to appropriate an agenda that belongs to all computer scientists and the Argentina as a whole. This agenda does not belong to a specific administration, but is the result of the effort and dedication of the entire IT community and must be managed with transparency and for the benefit of all.

Numerous forums, including European Union, have been trying and warning about the indiscriminate use of artificial intelligence. In fact, different military or legal tests have been carried out and they have shown errors or inventions by artificial intelligence to support their argument. Following the analogy used by the president and the minister, precisely, it is a uncontrolled artificial intelligence that takes the human being as an enemy. We have to understand that the worst thing we can believe is that technology can solve all human problems.

If used well, it is a great tool to help solve them. But, ultimately, it is we who must define which societies we want to live in and to what extent we want to delegate our will to algorithms. Algorithms that, on the other hand, are developed by people, knowledge workers who, in many cases, due to piece-rate salaries and working conditions in different parts of the world, carry out these tools with all their sacrifice and effort. This is not the modernity we want, rather it is quite the opposite.

Therefore, we welcome meetings and dialogue tables that generate job opportunities in the country. Companies like Globant or Mercado Libre are noteworthy in their magnitude, their growth and the importance they have, not only for the knowledge economy, but the economy in general. We can affirm that they are part of the identity of the Argentina, since they were born and raised in our country. We need these cases to multiply, but without ceasing to pay attention to the professional career, nor to employers and SME companies, which are also a great engine of innovation and research in our country.

On the other hand, the lack of technical staff, the trend of freelancers and global competition for knowledge are difficulties that have not been resolved. Therefore, we must revalue our profession, not only in terms of salary. If we really believe that there is sustained progress and at the level of what the sector demands.

We will continue working and defending all the rights and competencies of workers in the sector, promoting a strong, innovative technology sector committed to the development of Argentina.
