Important role models
Bruce Willis’ family made the actor’s dementia public relatively soon after the diagnosis, his colleague Christina Applegate often talks about her multiple sclerosis and singer Kylie Minogue announced to the public 18 years ago that she had breast cancer. Admitting that you are suffering from a serious illness is a step that requires a lot of courage. Anyone who speaks openly about it and their treatments is an important role model for people who have a similar fate.
It is understandable that not everyone stands by their diagnosis – but those who have a lot of power and publicity should use it to call for preventive measures – this can save lives.

Nothing is more private
When you receive a terrible diagnosis, the world suddenly becomes a different place. All at once you are confronted with your own vulnerability and mortality. Nothing is more personal and private. In this situation, hardly anyone wants to share their suffering with the sensationalist masses.
Even prominent people have the right to consider their health as a purely private matter. The problem is that a serious illness is hard to keep secret – especially when you are in the public eye. And if it is not clear what it is, the door is wide open to wild speculation. This too can develop into an unbearable situation.
