Golden Globe Awards in 2022 will be held without broadcast

The 2022 Golden Globes will not be televised. This is reported by the portal Deadline with reference to a representative of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

“This year the event will be private and will not be broadcast live,” the portal quotes its source.

In doing so, he said, HFPA will provide real-time updates on the winners on the Golden Globes official website and social media.

The final results of the award will be announced in a press release, which will be released at the end of the event, the portal notes.

According to Deadline, the decision to withdraw from the broadcast is not related to problems with the contract of NBC, which has been broadcasting the award for many years, and the organizing association of the Golden Globe.

“NBC is not interfering with HFPA’s live coverage,” the source explained.

On January 4, it was reported that the awards ceremony will be held without a red carpet and media representatives, and celebrities will have to wear protective masks.

In May 2021, NBC, which traditionally hosted the Golden Globes, announced that it would not do so next year because the jury did not adequately reflect the diversity of American society. At the same time, the TV channel announced its readiness to broadcast in 2023, if the corresponding changes are made to the jury.

In February, the Los Angeles Times reported that it was completely absent from the award’s jury, which consisted of 87 black journalists. The organizers promised to correct this omission and “make the necessary changes” both in the organization itself and “in the industry as a whole.”

In the same month, the organizers of the Golden Globe were accused of corruption. The media published an investigation into the financial schemes of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. According to the newspaper, 87 participants received too large payments for the standards of a non-profit organization.

The association promised to improve, and in October it added 21 new journalists to its ranks, 29% of whom, it said, identified themselves as black.

Celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo have criticized the HFPA for the proposed changes, claiming they fell short of expectations. Tom Cruise returned three Golden Globes in protest. More than 100 PR firms have threatened to boycott the HFPA, and Netflix and Amazon have severed ties with the organization.

The annual Golden Globe Awards are second only to the Oscars in the USA in terms of prestige. The award is presented based on the results of the past year in more than two dozen categories covering cinema and television. The award was established by foreign journalists in October 1943, and the first awards ceremony took place in January 1944.
