Scientists have not ruled out the emergence of a supermutant coronavirus

After entering the animal environment, the coronavirus can mutate so much that it turns into a “super mutant” and cause a new outbreak of the disease. Scientists spoke about this on Saturday, January 8, in a conversation with URA.RU.

“It is necessary to carefully monitor the entire subsequent fate of the“ Omicron ”variant, both in humans and in animals. It cannot be ruled out that with direct and reverse zoonotic transmissions, some super mutant may one day appear, ”said Sergei Tokarev, Doctor of Medicine.

Scientific supervisor of the State Institution Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums named after V.I. Mechnikov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Zverev agreed with the opinion of his colleague and added that mutations of the coronavirus that have formed in the animal population can become extremely dangerous for people.

“When a virus finds an intermediate host, it can change so much that it becomes deadly and takes on completely different properties. The previous SARS from bats got to small mammals, and from them already into the human body, “Zverev noted.

Scientists stressed that it is now important not to engage in sedation, thinking that the pandemic will end with the Omicron coronavirus strain.

On January 5, Tokarev spoke about the effect of Omicron on the body. According to him, immunity is often found in the “affected area” of this strain, some of the cells of which lose their ability to resist the virus. He also stated that Omicron would be able to circulate forever during transmission from humans to animals, and then back to humans.

On December 30, the head of Rospotrebnadzor of the Russian Federation, Anna Popova, said that the Omicron coronavirus strain is three to five times more infectious than other infection options. She also noted that the first manifestations of the disease in those infected with this strain are observed as early as 3-5 days after infection.

Two days earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the high ability of the Russian vaccine against COVID-19 Sputnik V to fight the Omicron strain.

A large-scale vaccination campaign is underway in the Russian Federation. Citizens are vaccinated for free. Six vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, which became the first vaccine against COVID-19 in the Russian Federation and the world, as well as Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N, KoviVak and Sputnik M …
