The deadline for issuing a Russian passport will be no more than five days from July 1. This was announced on Saturday, January 8, at the press center of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition, the document can be obtained in five days, regardless of the citizen’s place of residence and the reasons for replacing the document.
“From July 1, 2022, a new passport will be issued within five working days, regardless of place of residence, stay, actual residence or circumstances of its replacement,” the department said.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified that the same period for issuing a passport will apply when a digital document format is introduced.
Currently, the period for issuing a passport is 10 days if the documents are submitted at the place of residence, and 30 days in all other cases.
Earlier, on December 26, the head of the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Valentina Kazakova announced that they plan to start issuing electronic passports from January 2023. She also noted that the number of issued passports of a new type, first of all, will depend on the desire of citizens to receive them, but, according to forecasts, at the initial stage, their number will be at least 100 thousand.
Later, the department reported that the paper passport will be canceled when an electronic document is issued.
The pilot regions for the introduction of a digital passport, the issuance of which will begin in 2023, will be Moscow, the Moscow region and the Republic of Tatarstan. According to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, such a passport can be used anywhere in Russia. He stressed that replacing a paper document with a smart card will remain the choice of every citizen. However, the Deputy Prime Minister is confident that the choice of the majority of Russians will be in favor of electronic media.
