Died Olympic champion in weightlifting Viktor Mazin

Victor Mazin, Olympic champion of the 1980 Moscow Games in weightlifting, died at the age of 67. This was announced on Saturday, January 8, by Mazin’s adopted son Igor Devyatkin.

“He died of throat cancer and suffered a stroke shortly before his death. The last time I spoke with him by phone was on January 3, when he told me that he had been operated on after a lump was found in his throat. And this morning they called and said that he died of throat cancer, metastases, ”TASS quoted Devyatkin as saying.

He added that Mazin died in Minusinsk. He will be buried in the village of Pokrovka, Kuraginsky District, Krasnoyarsk Territory. The exact date of the athlete’s funeral is currently unknown.

Mazin was born on June 18, 1954 in the village of Chernovskie Kopi, Chita Region. After graduating from vocational school, he worked in a mine. Since childhood, he participated in all-Union weightlifting competitions.

The athlete won the 1978 USSR Cup, became the second at the 7th Summer Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR and won the country’s championship in 1980.

In 1980 Mazin in the weight category up to 60 kg won the Olympics in Moscow and the World Championship, which was held as part of the Games. Then he set an Olympic record in snatch (130 kg) and an Olympic record for featherweight weightlifters (290 kg).
