Today in Argentina, more than a million girls and boys go to bed without eating. I had the chance to see this on July 3 when I visited the Nutritional Recovery Center of the San Roque Hospital in the city of Embarcación and met Sofia, who is 3 years old and was hospitalized with her mother due to malnutrition. My oldest daughter is also called Sofia and I couldn’t help but think about how it would feel not to be able to feed her. I got a lump in my throat.
Thanks to the collaboration of companies and charitable individuals, UNICEF is providing support to help combat malnutrition and promote healthy eating in Embarcación and many other towns in the country. But it is not enough.
Today, the majority of children are poor. Millions of girls, boys and adolescents have been living in danger every day for years: due to a lack of adequate nutrition, access to health care and quality education, and exposure to situations of mistreatment, violence and abuse.
What is their fault for being born in poverty, for not having a plate of food, a book, a toy? How much longer are we going to wait to address this issue?
I remember that years ago in our campaigns we used a phrase: “If the children are well, Argentina is well.” The level of well-being of boys and girls is the best indicator of what is happening to us as a society.
Taking care of what matters most is essential: wherever we are, we must assume the responsibility of providing a better present for each girl and boy.
The formula for improving this situation exists and it is with the commitment and solidarity of everyone. It means dedicating our time, our ideas and our donations to be part of the generation that puts childhood first and changes this unjust reality.
At UNICEF you will always find an ally for children. For almost 40 years we have been working in Argentina together with governments and other allies to improve public policies aimed at guaranteeing their well-being. In addition, we carry out projects designed to provide help to the most vulnerable children in areas such as nutrition, health, education and protection.
In 2023 alone, more than 110,000 girls, boys and families benefited from the initiatives that UNICEF implemented in early childhood centres and schools, soup kitchens and care spaces, primary health care centres and hospitals.
I invite you to learn about and support the work of UNICEF and other organizations dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of children and adolescents. There is no time to waste. Together we can change the outcome of this story.
