Anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) “Tor-M2” entered service with the newly formed 20th Guards Carpathian-Berlin motorized rifle division, sources in the military department told Izvestia. The anti-aircraft regiment of this unit is equipped with unique air defense systems.
The division is currently deployed in Volgograd and the Volgograd region. It is part of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District, which, if necessary, will be able to operate against NATO’s southern flank.
Prior to that, the chief of the air defense of the RF Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Alexander Leonov, announced the signing of the largest contract for supplies to the troops “Tor-M2”. Until 2027, about 100 billion rubles have been allocated for their purchase. At the same time, part of the air defense missile system will be released in a special Arctic version – the combat module of such complexes is installed on two-link tracked all-terrain vehicles “Vityaz”. Tor-M2 is the most modern air defense system in its class.
“This is a universal short-range air defense system that can operate on a wide range of targets – from aircraft and attack helicopters to drones, cruise missiles and high-precision missiles,” military expert Alexei Lenkov told Izvestia.
The air defense complexes are classified as defensive systems, the former Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ordzhonikidze reminded Izvestia.
“The deployment of air defense systems is a preventive measure. “Torah” is a tactical system that will help cover our troops and strategically important civilian infrastructure. Their appearance in the south of our country is a deterrent and a signal that we are strengthening our defense capability and are ready to repel any aggression, ”he said.
The combat readiness of air defense units is now given special attention. In 2021, the Tor-M2 crews conducted at least 10 exercises at the ranges of the Southern, Western, Eastern Districts and the Baltic Fleet.
