Justice

Drivers are happy to be asked to pay. Anyone who drives on the Tauern Autobahn pays at least four times (mineral oil tax, sales tax, vignette, toll). And it is fundamentally okay that the incentives for individual mobility are not increased.

The mileage allowance is, however, a cost reimbursement for those employees who go about their work with their own car. Since the last increase in 2008, employees have had to swallow the higher costs themselves and have hardly had the chance to switch to public transport. If the employer were to pay more, the employee would have to pay tax on the overpayment. Increasing the compensation would therefore be an act of justice.

Wrong signal

The measure was actually limited in time: in 2008 the government increased the commuter allowance and mileage allowance. The reason was increased fuel prices. They soon fell, but of course no one dared to reverse the increase.

Record prices in 2012 and lowest prices in 2016 followed, which have not been exceeded to this day. The up (as is currently the case) and down of fuel prices does not justify an increase in the mileage allowance. Otherwise we would have an increase with every increase, which is maintained as costs fall. And increased acquisition costs for vehicles are only of limited use as an argument for increasing the mileage allowance as a tax-free cost replacement.

In times of climate change, this step would send the wrong signal.
