At the end of the film, the Spanish author kissed Swinton and Moore on the cheeks and raised their arms as if they were boxing champions. He then walked down the stairs with his new muses, prolonging the ovation by shaking hands with fans in the cinema.

Swintonin a white Chanel suit, hugged Moore, who was wearing a glittering gold dress. Moore appeared to have tears in her eyes while Almodóvar, in a cotton candy pink suit, eagerly basked in all the applause, while The crowd chanted: “Pedro! Pedro! Pedro!”.
Almodóvar appeared to be individually greeting each fan in the Sala Grande during the enthusiastic applause. He clapped as Moore clutched his arm. As the applause died down around the 14-minute mark, Almodóvar extended the applause by running up the stairs from the theater balcony to sign autographs and take selfies with fans. Moore and Swinton laughed as they tried to calculate exactly when they should try to escape the theater.
The longest standing ovation so far at the 2024 edition of the Venice Film Festival
The applause for The Room Next Door has so far overshadowed the festival’s other big ovations: The Brutalist of Brady Corbet (12 minutes), Maria of Pablo Larrain (8 minutes) starring Angelina Jolie like the famous opera singer Maria Callas and The Order of Justin Kurzel (7 minutes), a police thriller from the 80s starring Jude Law.
The film, Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, premiered on a night in Venice when the unbearable heatwave that has defined this year’s festivities abated for a few hours. Moore and Swinton held hands in the light rain falling on the red carpet, posing for photos as paparazzi shouted their names.
What is The Room Next Door about?
In “The Room Next Door,” the two Oscar winners play Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), longtime friends who worked at the same New York magazine early in their careers. Ingrid, now a successful novelist, reunites with Martha as she faces the final stages of cancer.
Following its premiere in Venice, “The Room Next Door” will be released in theaters in December.
