Kylian Mbappé rejected mediation with the Paris Saint-Germain proposal by the French Professional Football League (LFP) concerning the 55 million euros in unpaid wages and bonuses that the striker is claiming from his former clubannounced this Wednesday the entourage of the current Real Madrid player in a statement to AFP.
Lawyers for both sides met on Wednesday morning at the invitation of the LFP’s legal committee, to which Mbappé appealed.
“The commission insisted on mediation between the parties, which Paris Saint-Germain had been seeking for many months,” the French club said in a statement.
“The possibility of a measurement was mentioned this morning” during the hearing before the legal committee of the French LFP, the player’s entourage said in a statement to AFP. “This hypothesis was rejected, in session, by the player’s representative,” they added.
“A mediation would be useless to confirm the lack of payment that results from a simple analysis of the player’s salaries,” the source continued, without specifying what options Mbappé would explore. Among them, taking the case to UEFA or the French courts.
PSG is confident that such appeals would be long and uncertain. And because it is willing to rely on the testimony of its sporting director Luis Campos and even coach Luis Enrique, who were present at the meeting in which the agreement was reached in August 2023.
Earlier this year, before the forward’s intention to leave was known, both sides claimed Mbappé had waived part of his bonuses in a deal reached with PSG in August 2023 after he was sidelined for a month.
The player himself told reporters on 3 January: “With the agreement reached with the president in the summer (in 2023), my decision matters little, we managed to protect all parties, preserving the club’s peace of mind for the challenges ahead, that’s the most important thing.”
But this “tranquility” soon gave way to exchanges of emails between the lawyers of the two parties in recent months, some of which AFP was able to access.
Kylian Mbappé is demanding payment of €55 million (more than $60 million) comprising the last third of a signing bonus (€36 million gross), which the player was due to receive in February, the last three months of salary under his contract (April, May and June), as well as an “ethical bonus” on those three months.
According to the club, the player’s demand comes after he failed to respect the agreement reached in August 2023. Mbappé’s entourage, for its part, considers, according to L’Equipe, that this agreement is invalid as it has not been signed.
PSG believes that the verbal agreement was sealed in the presence of numerous witnesses and that the player’s own statement of 3 January gives it legal value.
