Bodegas Bianchi reached a new milestone in its history with the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021, who was awarded the prestigious trophy “Master” at The Global Malbec Masters 2024This recognition is one of the most influential in the world of wine and has been organized by The Drinks Businessa London-based reference publication specialising in wines and spirits.
A renowned competition
The Global Malbec Masters is part of a series of competitions known as The Global Masters, launched in 2013. What sets these competitions apart is that they focus on evaluating wines solely on style and price, giving each label the chance to shine for its quality. The jury is made up of world-class experts, such as Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and experienced wine buyers, who blind taste the competing products.
Being one of the most rigorous and objective competitions in the world of wine, receiving the title of “Master” is an exceptional distinction. Only wines that stand out for their quality manage to be awarded, obtaining Bronze, Silver, Gold medals and, in the most outstanding cases, the coveted Master title. This year, Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 has been one of the big winners, placing itself among the best Malbecs in the world.

“The Master Award is the highest honor a wine can receive in this competition, and being evaluated blindly against wines from the most important producing countries gives it a global character. This recognition places us on the podium of the great Malbecs of the world,” he says. Pablo Glöggler, General Manager of Bodegas Bianchi.
The Chacayes as a terroir of excellence
The Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 originates from Los Chacayes, one of the most outstanding areas of the Uco Valley, Mendoza. This region, known for its altitude and a climate that favors a wide thermal amplitude between day and night, has proven to be an exceptional terroir for the production of high-quality wines.
Bodegas Bianchi has been able to take advantage of these conditions since the opening of its Enzo Bianchi Winery in Valle de Uco seven years ago, centralizing the production of its iconic wines there with its own grapes from Los Chacayes and San Rafael.
This Malbec is a single-vineyard wine, made from grapes from a specific lot that ensures perfect polyphenolic ripeness. This level of detail is what gives it its unique character. The low natural productivity of the selected plot produces thick-skinned grapes, rich in aromas and flavours that capture the essence of the terroir.
The first varietal version of this emblematic wine was presented in 2019 with the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2017 vintage, the first great wine produced in the Valle de Uco winery, with grapes from Los Chacayes. Only five years later, the 2021 vintage has achieved the highest award on the international stage.
Silvio Alberto, Chief Winemaker & Viticulture The winery group’s director describes the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 as a “single vineyard & single block”, a pure expression of the specific vineyard from which it comes. “The low natural productivity of this plot provides a very thick, crispy skin, with very good aromatic expression. It is a deep red wine with attractively violet and lively nuances,” explains Alberto. In addition, on the nose, typical Malbec descriptors are perceived, such as fresh red fruits, floral hints of violets, a spicy touch and herbal and mineral flashes that reflect the perfect union between the terroir and the aging process.

The winemaker also details the sensory experience that this wine offers on the palate: “It offers refreshing acidity, sharp tannins and an elegant texture, with great structure and complexity. Without a doubt, an iconic wine that perfectly expresses the qualities and attributes that Los Chacayes can offer.”
Part of the distinctive character of the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 comes from its aging process. 90% of the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, which gives it structure and complexity, while the remaining 10% was in amphorae, a technique that seeks to enhance the purity of the wine without the influence of wood. This balance between barrels and amphorae gives it a unique and refined profile.
Production of this Malbec is limited, with only 27,522 750 ml bottles and 186 1500 ml bottles, making it an exclusive piece for collectors and wine lovers. In addition, its aging potential is significant, with an estimated 20 years of improvement in the bottle, allowing its complexity and depth to develop over time.
A tribute to tradition and innovation
The Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 is a clear example of the balance between tradition and innovation that characterizes Bodegas Bianchi. The winery has managed to keep the vision of its founder alive while incorporating precision viticulture practices along with cutting-edge technology to continue perfecting its wines.
This iconic wine is the result of a joint effort between the winery’s agronomic, viticultural and oenological teams, who have worked in perfect harmony to clearly express the terroir of Los Chacayes in each bottle. For Silvio Alberto, the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 is “a work of art, passion and attention to detail.”
With the recognition obtained at The Global Malbec Masters 2024, Bodegas Bianchi reaffirms its position as one of the benchmarks in Malbec production worldwide. This Master trophy not only positions the Enzo Bianchi Gran Malbec 2021 among the best wines in the world, but also underlines the relevance of Argentina in the global wine scene.
