A tsunami threat has been announced in the Kuril Islands after the eruption of an underwater volcano near the islands of Tonga. On January 15, RIA Novosti was informed by a representative of emergency services.
“The tsunami center of the FBGU “Sakhalin UGMS” until 21:00 on January 15 announced a warning about a possible approach to the Kuril Islands of a tsunami wave with a height of no more than 0.2 m (for Japan – 0.3 m) as a result of the eruption of an underwater volcano in Tong,” — the message says.
There is no threat to the population and territory of Russia. We have already carried out notification of two ports in the South Kuril and Kuril urban districts.
According to the Japan Meteorological Administration, a tsunami threat of up to 3 meters has been declared in the country.
A warning is in effect for the Japanese islands of Amami and Tokara in the Pacific Ocean.
Waves up to one meter high can reach the entire Pacific coast of Japan, in the western part of Kagoshima Prefecture, a wave can be 0.2 m high, RIA Novosti writes.
On December 21, seismologists registered an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near the Kuril Islands. The tremors were felt by residents of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, as well as the villages of Malokurilskoye and Krabozavodskoye.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.9. The source was located 35 km southeast of Yuzhno-Kurilsk and occurred at a depth of 100 km.
