Doctors spoke about the treatment of the disease from which Jobs died

Doctors from the SOGAZ Medicine Group of Companies, the Asklepios Nord clinic and the Kazan State Medical University spoke about methods of treating pancreatic cancer that can prolong the lives of patients.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most dangerous cancers that claimed the lives of Apple CEO Steve Jobs and tenor Luciano Pavarotti. It progresses very quickly, metastasizing to other organs, but does not give any symptoms for a long time, which is why it is usually detected at a late stage. However, thanks to the development of medicine today, doctors can help even those patients who actually had no chance a few years ago.

Experts shared their experience at a conference on cytoreductive surgery, held at the sites of the SOGAZ International Medical Center in St. Petersburg and the SOGAZ Multidisciplinary Medical Center in Gelendzhik.

The main topic of the event was cytoreductive operations, which are relevant at the present stage of development of oncology. This is a type of surgical intervention aimed at reducing the volume of a malignant neoplasm, and, accordingly, its negative effect on organs and tissues.

Using an integrated approach, SOGAZ Medicine surgeons successfully provide assistance to patients with cancer. During the conference, doctors spoke about a unique case of treatment of a 55-year-old patient with a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas, who underwent several courses of treatment over two years.

“I went to different clinics, but they couldn’t help me anywhere, they said that a unique operation was needed, which no one here does. And only when I began to see an oncologist at the SOGAZ clinic, I found out that there are surgeons here who can do this. I underwent several operations, after which the quality of life, of course, increased, ”said a patient from Gelendzhik.

Professor Asad Kutup, Chief Physician of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Asklepios Nord Clinic (Hamburg), noted that for a long time, patients with pancreatic cancer received only palliative care and had a very short life expectancy. However, treatment options have changed significantly in recent years due to the successful introduction of cytoreductive surgery in combination with subsequent hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

It is noted that the treatment of oncological diseases is one of the main specializations of the SOGAZ clinic in Gelendzhik. Doctors treat patients with almost all of the most common types of cancer.

Evgeniy Vladimirovich Tokarenko, Chief Physician of the IMC SOGAZ in Gelendzhik, explained that the unique technological capabilities of the clinic make it possible to perform both cytoreductive operations aimed at limiting the growth and spread of tumors and provide palliative care of the highest professional level to incurable patients.

According to the chief oncologist-radiologist of the SOGAZ Medicine Group of Companies, MD. Pavel Rumyantsev, in the near future, on the basis of a group of clinics, it is planned to create a unique integration model for the development of oncological care. This system will allow the patient, having applied to one clinic and passed the examination once, to receive a whole pool of expert opinions of doctors from different countries and choose the most convenient treatment option in Russia or abroad.

Earlier, on October 23, the head of the oncocoloproctology department of the Moscow City Oncological Hospital No. 62, Ph.D. Ilya Chernikovsky at the conference at the IMC “SOGAZ” in Gelendzhik named a way to reduce mortality from colon cancer. He noted that population screening will help to find colorectal cancer and cure it at an early stage.

As experts noted at the conference, an integrated approach is used to treat colorectal cancer, including chemotherapy, radiation, immune and targeted therapies. The treatment plan is selected by specialists individually, based on each specific case.
