The Project 971 nuclear submarine Samara will return to the Pacific Fleet in 2023. Sources in the RF Ministry of Defense told Izvestia about this on Monday, January 17.
“Samara” will be repaired and carried out a small modernization: they will install new radio-electronic equipment and replace a number of components and mechanisms. And most importantly, they will be equipped with Caliber missiles. Experts note that this submarine remains one of the most dangerous in the world.
At the same time, the Pacific Fleet will be left without the Bratsk nuclear submarine of the same type. Her repair was also planned, but the submarine was declared unsuitable for repair, and therefore it was decided not to restore the device. Bratsk was excluded from the state contract for modernization after the conclusion of an additional agreement on March 5, 2018.
“Samara” and “Bratsk” belong to the project 971 “Pike-B”. In the West, submarines of this class are called “sharks”. These are multi-purpose nuclear submarines designed to search, detect, track and destroy enemy nuclear submarines and aircraft carrier groups. “Pike-B” low-noise, which allows them to be the first to detect the enemy. The Americans have long appreciated their fighting qualities and capabilities. “Bratsk” and “Samara” were built at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur shipyard and included in the Pacific Fleet in 1989 and 1994, respectively.
