Make room for everyone!
Yes, there will be no choice but to hunt more cormorants, goosanders and otters if you don’t want empty waters. Just as the fox is regulated because of the game, the fish hunters must also be limited to an acceptable level – unless man jumps over his shadow. That would mean finally taking the EU Water Framework Directive seriously, which prescribes good ecological status for water bodies by 2027. That would mean: large-scale renaturation of our canalised waters, continuity and connection of tributaries. That would mean: massive investment in ecology, and moderation of the hydropower lobby. Then one day there would all be room: humans, otters, birds and fish.

Suppose our waters were ecologically sound, suppose they provided fish with an adequate structure with spawning grounds and nurseries for the young. In this case, the stocks of different species would probably be more stable. And it wouldn’t be a problem if the cormorants went hunting for fish. Unfortunately this is not so. Our bodies of water are heavily obstructed, the habitat for fish is disappearing, stocks are declining. The cormorant should now atone for this, as it does nothing but get its natural food from the water. Killing the birds is definitely easier, cheaper, faster and more convenient than restoring sections of the river. It is not ecologically valuable.
