The Democratic Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, and the former Republican president donald trump are tied in seven battleground states that could decide the November presidential election, a Wall Street Journal opinion poll showed Friday.
The poll showed Harris with a marginal lead of 2 percentage points in Arizona, Georgia and Michigan, Trump with 6 points in Nevada and 1 in Pennsylvania, and both tied in North Carolina and Wisconsin.
The poll, conducted between Sept. 28 and Oct. 8 among 600 registered voters in each state, has a margin of error of 4 percentage points in each state.
The tie results match other polls that reflect a tight race ahead of the Nov. 5 election, as Americans grapple with concerns about the economy, immigration, women’s rights and the nation’s democratic values. when choosing between the two candidates.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll also revealed this week that Trump and Harris are very evenly matched nationally, with Harris’ slight advantage of 46% compared to the former president’s 43%.
Polls of voters in swing states can be an important indicator, since the Electoral College results by state will determine the winner, with the seven battleground states likely being decisive.
Harris, 59, would obtain a narrow majority in the Electoral College if she wins the states in which she has an advantage according to the WSJ poll.
Trump, 78, is making his third consecutive bid for the White House after losing in 2020 to President Joe Biden. He continues to falsely blame that defeat on widespread voter fraud while facing criminal charges, which he denies, over efforts to overturn the election results.
Harris became the Democrats’ nominee after Biden abandoned his re-election bid in July. She is a former senator, California attorney general and local prosecutor who aims to present a new vision for America and rekindle the Democratic coalition of young voters, people of color and suburban women, while displacing some Republican voters.
“This is a tie,” Republican pollster David Lee, who conducted the poll with Democrat Michael Bocian, told the Journal.
More voters said they supported Trump on the economy and immigration, while others said Harris would do a better job when it comes to housing, health and caring for people like them, according to the WSJ poll.
