Gunther Neubert AHK Argentina Chamber of Commerce Germany
“Argentina has everything that Europe needs, food, energy and minerals, and also something that is not talked about as much: human capital,” said the German executive in dialogue with Energy Report.
Journalist: Why was AHK Argentina present at the International Lithium Seminar?
Gunther Neubert: The Argentine-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce was in Jujuy with a group of businessmen from the mining sector, particularly from the lithium sector, because lithium is of great importance for German industry and in particular for the energy transition in which we have been in for more than a decade. And Germany is not very rich in minerals and does not have much lithium either, but it is a great need.
Journalist: What did you find at this event organized by Panorama Minero?
GN: With an important exchange. This visit with German companies is so that they learn about the economic reality of the country, the potential regarding the lithium and other minerals, such as copperfor example, which is also of great importance to us. And the easiest thing is always a direct exchange. The entrepreneurs on the panels were able to present their technologies, their strengths and also what role sustainability plays in the mining issue.
Journalist: And what role does it play?
GN: Sustainability is a very important issue in the German economy, not only in mining, but I think that if we want to fight climate change, sustainability also plays a very important role in the mining sector. And this is special about the German economy, this approach. Our businessmen were able to present their strengths and new technological lines very well.
Journalist: What do the German companies that visited Jujuy do?
GN: We came with eight businessmen, some from consulting, but others who have a lot of experience in exploitation, in technology, geophysics, mechanical separation, palletizing, engineering, but they are also from the secondary industry of mining, such as water pumping, waste treatment. liquids. It was a good mix and that’s why we are quite happy. We are going to return very soon, in two weeks, with other businessmen.
Journalist: Is the interest in mining projects?
GN: Now the focus is mining forks lithiumbut our Chamber has been here in the country for 108 years. We have 340 affiliated companies, half of them are German companies with a lot of tradition here in the country, such as Siemensmore than 150 years here in the country. Bosch turns 100 this year. Within the framework of a roadshow what we do in the Argentine provinces, We are going to visit Jujuy again on October 24 and 25. We are going to have meetings with the governor and his cabinet, with other institutions, but also with the businessmen of Jujuy for a certain form of matchmaking and we are going to present the German offer here in Argentina and all the tradition that we have here in the country.
Journalist: In what other sectors, besides mining?
GN: For Germany the sector mining It is not the most important of the businesses we carry out in the country, although it is still so. Our strengths are the entire sector of energyfrom traditional to now much more with a focus on renewable energy, and energy efficiency towards the production of green hydrogen, a very important issue for the German economy, also important for the economy and for the development of the Argentine economy.

Journalist: Why do you consider it to be an important issue for the Argentine economy?
GN: Because the potential is enormous. Argentina has the sun in the North, with a much stronger power than the world average, I think with an intensity of the sun in the year 20% above the average. In the South they have the wind, but also in the pampas the biomass from agriculture. They are spectacular conditions to produce green hydrogenbecause for green we need renewable energy and Germany There is a huge need in the future for green hydrogen, and it is part of the energy transition.
Journalist: Where do they need green hydrogen?
GN: In our steel production plants, a strong point of traditional German industry. We want to change traditional energy to renewable energyand we need the green hydrogen. That is why we are working so intensely on this issue, but also in agriculture and technology, for a smart farming. These are issues of great importance apart from the services we provide such as dual training.
Journalist: And what can they contribute to Argentina?
GN: The training of young people under the German concept of 50% theory, 50% practice. We see a lot of potential here and, therefore, we want to intensify contact.
Journalist: For some time now there has been a very strong interest not only in Germany, but also in Europe in enhancing Argentine resources. What does our country have?
GN: Argentina has everything Europe needs, food, energy and mineralsand also something that is not talked about as much: human capital. Regarding knowledge services, Argentina is already among the leaders in Latin America and if we see the number of unicorns or deep tech startupsArgentina already plays a very important role and that is why it is of interest, but not only to multinationals and large industry, but also to SMEs. The success of the German economy is SMEs, the German economy is based on the efforts of SMEs and we as the Chamber also give a lot of focus to SMEs.
Journalist: Do you detect any progress in the Mercosur-EU Agreement?
GN: It’s a pretty difficult question to answer. Germany wants this treaty, Argentina wants this treaty, but we have been negotiating for many, many years and a consensus of all participants would be very favorable.
Journalist: What is needed then?
GN: We have to do our tasks in Europe. In the meetings with representatives of the Argentine Government it has been shown that our countries, Argentina or Germany, are very much in favor of this treaty, but it will not be a treaty between both countries, but rather between Mercosur and the European Union, and so we need this patience. There are always new or old issues, where we thought they were already resolved, but we did not lose hope. I hope we continue moving forward.
