Never like before

Thanks to Ralf Rangnick, boundaries are currently being pushed in Austrian football. For the first time – at least since I can remember – a team boss of the Austrian senior national team is trying to sustainably develop football throughout the country. Young talent including its own training, uniform coaching training and playing philosophy – Rangnick is currently setting new standards. Gone forever must be the days when being a team leader consisted of watching games abroad and taking two-week courses. The requirement profile for every future team boss must be the one that Rangnick currently fulfills. This consists of a lot of extra duties. Whoever fulfills this also has more power.

CONS

Like in the club

Rangnick is a pacesetter for Austrian football – far beyond the playing field. He fills a vacuum: From the outside it gives the impression that sports director Peter Schöttel has no objection to Rangnick taking on the leadership role.

The German is a godsend for domestic football. But it also has to move forward in a structured manner according to its era. The ÖFB will most likely not find someone who, like Rangnick, is a driving force not only in national team matters as a successor. That’s why sports at the ÖFB have to be set up in a similar way to a professional club: the sports director sets the line and develops the concepts, and the team manager is appointed according to these specifications.

And what is your opinion about it?
