“This referee accepts the request made by the prosecution for 20 years and 6 months in prison for Mr. Alejandro Toledo Manrique“, announced the Superior Court at a hearing attended by 78-year-old former president who claimed to suffer from cancer and heart problems.


Since 2023, Toledo has been preventively in a special prison in Lima awaiting the verdict of the Justice that declared him guilty of collusion and money laundering for having received 35 million dollars from Odebrecht. He received nine years for the crime of collusion and 11 years and 6 months for money laundering.
According to the ruling, the former president accepted bribes in consideration for tenders to build two sections of the South Interoceanic Highway, which connects the the Pacific coast of Peru and the Atlantic coast of Brazil.
Four former presidents of Peru investigated for the Odebrecht plot
There are three other former presidents who are being investigated for the same crime. Toledo was the first convicted, although suspicions about him continue. Alan Garcia (2006-2011), who committed suicide in 2019 before being arrested, Ollanta Humala (2011-2016) and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018).
The sentence was read at a hearing in the court adjacent to the small prison for former presidents east of Lima, where Toledo has been held preventively for 18 months since he arrived extradited from the United States in April 2023.
