The Minister of Defense, Luis Petriassured that the government of Javier Milei “he wants to vindicate the Armed Forces” and contrasted the policy of the libertarian administration in this matter with that of the Kirchnerist administrations. He pointed out that during those periods, in addition to definancing, there was a “persecution and lynching” against those in uniform.
“Today there is a government that loves and vindicates the Armed Forces.” Along these lines, he confirmed: “We come to claim our history, military parades are backthose who guaranteed the independence of our countryand it is led by our veterans of Malvinas, That is a fair recognition,” Petri celebrated.
Furthermore, he remarked: “We want to recover the Armed forces and value them so that they are guarantors of the peace of the millions of Argentines, in that We are working with President Milei“.
During his speech at an event of the Rotary Club of Buenos Aires, the official maintained that he has “many challenges” at the head of the Defense portfolio. He mentioned the need for “reequip the Armed Forces to fulfill their role”such as “guaranteeing peace and surveillance of airspace.”
Luis Petri pointed out against Kirchnerism for “persecution” and “lynching” of the Armed Forces
On the other hand, the official pointed out against the previous efforts of the Defense area and noted: “There was a definancing of the Armed Forces because it was said that they could be a factor of political destabilization. That was what characterized the first 20 years since the recovery of democracy. And later, with the advent of Kirchnerism, the definancing was followed by persecution with a continuous lynching of the forces“Petri said.
Along these lines, he added: “Their children could not say their parents’ profession at school because they suffered bullying if they said they were military, that was the situation. Our forces were vilified“he insisted.
Petri continued his criticism of the Kirchner administration in matters of Defense and regretted that “due to an ideological bias” the functions of the military were reduced. In any case, he assured that the Government is going to “modify” a decree that had limited the activities of the sector.
“Based on a capricious and unconstitutional decree, deeply ideological, it was established that for the armed forces to act in the face of aggression it had to be provoked by another State, when reality said that there were non-state agents that committed these attacks, such as paramilitary organizations or terrorists,” he said and complained that that decree “it limited the possibility of action by the armed forces in the face of external aggression, when Argentina has to be prepared for terrorist threats”.
“Therefore, in the coming weeks we will modify this decree that will allow the functional capabilities of the forces to be recovered“, the Minister announced about the measure that he has been promising for some time.
Furthermore, he anticipated that the military may also focus on “act at the borders when the Gendarmerie demands itwhere that force does not arrive or is not there to reinforce the surveillance of our borders” and so prevent crimes such as “illegal fishing” or “human trafficking”.
“All neighboring countries, whatever their ideology, from the Chili from (Gabriel) Boric to the Paraguay of (Santiago) Peña, all of them move their forces in their border areas. The only one that doesn’t do it is Argentina,” he compared.
Petri insisted that the Argentine forces cannot remain in “the deterrent presence without the ability to repel” and he stressed that the times are left behind when there was “a late night that spoke of the national and popular function” of the forces, in reference to the head of the Army during much of Kirchnerism, Cesar Milani.
