He October 25 marks International Day of Short People around the world. The date aims to disseminate information and raise awareness about the disease known as achondroplasia which generates an alteration in the growth of bones and cartilage in people, causing short stature and short limbs among other difficulties.

This anniversary was created in 2013 by Little People of America (LPA) initiative to honor the birth of William John Bertanzetti, better known as Billy Barty, who founded the organization in 1957. The purpose of creating this group was to learn about and share the experiences, information and challenges faced by people with this condition.

Achondroplasia

What is achondroplasia

Achondroplasia is a disorder that affects the growth and development of bones, cartilage and connective tissues, causing the most common type of dwarfism. It is characterized by short stature, usually less than 1.25 meters, a limited range of movement in the elbows, macrocephaly, short arms and legs, small fingers and normal intelligence.

It is estimated that throughout the world, one in every 25 thousand people are born with this condition. In the United States, October was chosen as National Dwarfism Awareness Month. One of the most important complaints of people who suffer from achondroplasia is that they are treated like children or they believe that touching them brings luck.

That is why it is important to use the date to raise awareness among the rest of the people and ask for empathy and treatment for people who suffer from the same condition as the rest of the population. Respect, beyond everything, should be paramount. The idea of the organization is that one day a specific date will not be needed to be aware of this.
