According to the first hypotheses of how the event occurred, the collapse began at the back of the affected building, where two people managed to escape before most of the disaster occurred and were unharmed. The rescue teams carry out the removal manually, that is, debris by debris.
It is estimated that between the 1st and 3rd floors there were occupants linked to the maintenance work that was being carried out at the hotel, among whom was one of the owners. The Fire Chief, for his part, assured that he contacted trapped people.
How many people are missing in the rubble?
The fire chief noted that “It is estimated that between 7 and 9 people were in the Hotel at the time of the collapse, among workers of a work that was being carried out with the incorporation of an elevator in the building.”
In the first images, it was possible to see how the 10-story building largely collapsed and ended up falling on another adjacent construction. For security reasons, several witnesses reported that they had to remain locked up while working on the operation. According to the head of the operation, “about 80% of the building” collapsed.
What the municipality of Villa Gesell says
On August 20, 2024, the municipality of Villa Gesell, through the Directorate of Private Buildings and Public Spaces, detected and stopped work that was being carried out inside the property for not having the proper authorization.
After the notification, the owners request, through a construction notice, authorization only for the following tasks: change of carpentry, changes of floor coverings, interior painting, change of bathroom coverings and removal of countertops.
These works are authorized by the Works Directorate with the exception that the change of carpentry was only authorized on the ground floor, and not on the upper floor.
Next, the owners add a technical report on some preparatory tasks for an elevator that they intended to install in the reception area (next to the public road, which is not part of the current collapsed structure), as well as the request for authorization for the construction of a passageway partition for this intended elevator.
Through another file, they request pre-feasibility of installation of said elevator, an act that the Municipality resolves by letting them know on October 15 of this month of the need to formally present the documentation corresponding to this elevator work.
At this time, although it is not possible to speak exactly about the details of the collapse, it can be stated that in the collapsed part (the rear part) the structure had been modified illegally and irregularly.
