See you later to Diana Mondino

See you later to Diana Mondino

October 30, 2024 – 7:30 p.m.

At the beginning of June I published a note warning of the difficulties that Diana Mondino faced within the government, which in the long or short term would lead to her displacement. He lasted longer than many of us thought, which speaks of his intelligence and management at the head of the Foreign Ministry. Now, it’s time to say see you later.

There are officials to whom, as a simple citizen, one cannot but thank them when they finish their administration. Especially when you know the personal sacrifice and selflessness with which they exercised their position, as there is some type of personal relationship with them. In this I can name people from practically all political stripes, without going any further than Gabriel Rubinstein and now Diana Mondino.

Of course, there is always something or a lot left to demand from them – to a greater or lesser extent they were all affected by the hubris of public power – but this is not something to question when they “bite the dust” and those who previously deified them today place them in the Judeca – the ninth ring of hell, according to Dante -, where those who betrayed their masters and benefactors are punished, completely immersed in ice.

Our officials don’t usually read it

If Julio Ramos, the founder of Ámbito, left us any lesson that has made this medium different from the others, it is that: “Here you don’t make firewood from a fallen tree.”

The Milei brothers were leaving behind Carlos Rodríguez, Emilio Ocampo, Fernando Cerimedo, Guillermo Ferraro, Eugenio Casielles, Nicola Posse, Miguel RussoDiana and many of the most brilliant minds who accompanied him from the beginning and catapulted the president to where he is today.

In Manual Oracle and Art of Prudence, which should be mandatory reading for all officials, the Jesuit Baltasar Gracia warned in 1647 of the need to “know how to play with the truth,” “use foolishness” and “contradict” (maxims 201 , 240 and 213). If today none of them accompanies the government, it is ultimately due to a mixture of their lack of obedience and their error of not knowing how to address the sovereign (“being in the opinion of giving pleasure”, maxim 32).

With this displacement, the government not only loses the last of the references that gave it “libertarian” academic support. (Although he is a pragmatic liberal, it is difficult to define Federico Sturzenegger – who is now left alone ideologically – as a “libertarian”)but what is really more important, he is left without front-line officials capable of replacing Luis “Toto” Caputo when he finishes his task and steps aside.

The “expulsion” of Mondino (of “dual nationality”: Cordoban and Argentine – a joke -, his nemesis is Israeli and Argentine), may not affect the current financial celebration that we are experiencing, but it undoubtedly affects the institutional quality of the ruling party .

In maxim 176 Gracián warns that one must “know, or listen to those who know.” Today Milei has fewer people who know.
