After a dispute of almost three decades, the CUBA club integrates women into the Board of Directors for the first time

Lucía García Fernández and María Mercedes Casáscaptain and vice-captain of the hockey team of the Club Universitario de Buenos Aires (CUBA), made history by being the first women to join the club’s board of directors. This step marks a significant advance in the modernization of one of the the city’s most traditional institutions.

The fight for the full inclusion of women in CUBA began on May 9, 1996when José Osvaldo Casás, Mercedes’ father, presented a request to the board of directors. In it, she asked that women be considered active partners. “A new way of thinking is necessary that values the dignity of women,” she said in her presentation. Despite their efforts, at the time, the commission rejected the petition, arguing that the statute was designed for college men. However, this request would become the first step in a battle of almost three decades.

In the last assembly, the single list of candidates to renew the board of directors was approved, which included Casás as a substitute member and Lucía García Fernández, “Luchi”, as auditor. Thus, both became the first women to be part of the board of directors of CUBA.

At the moment, Women represent 35% of the club’s members. Although many choose to remain members due to the reduced cost, Since the 2018 reform there are no differences in rights between men and women in the club. This advance, according to CUBA members, occurred “naturally,” as part of a gradual opening process.

Full access to the Viamonte Headquarters

This year, CUBA took another important step in terms of equality: it was approved that Women can use all the facilities at the Viamonte headquartershistorically reserved for men’s sporting activities. Although women have been full members since 2018, their access to Viamonte was conditional on building reforms.

Finally, on August 12, in an assembly with 768 votes in favor and 216 against, The budget was approved to carry out the necessary works, allowing female access to all the sports areas of the headquarters. The first stage of renovations, which consisted of adapting the bathrooms, was completed on October 17. Starting tomorrow, members will be able to use spaces such as the gym for judo, taekwondo, aikido, fencing, yoga, squash and the bar.

There are still works to be completed, such as the women’s locker rooms in the weight gym, the boxing room and other areas. The completion of these spaces is scheduled for the end of the year, and thus, CUBA will complete a historic transformation in terms of gender equality, ensuring that All its partners, without distinction of gender, have the same rights in all its facilities.
