The nominees for the Russian film award “White Elephant” at the end of 2021 have been published. On Thursday, January 20, Izvestia was informed by the coordinating group of the award.
The films Captain Volkonogov Fled (directed by Natasha Merkulova, Alexei Chupov), Medea (Alexander Zeldovich), Nuuccia (Vladimir Munkuev) and Unclenching Fists (Kira Kovalenko) are contending for the prize in the Best Film nomination.
Aleksey Fedorchenko (“The Last “Sweet Bulgaria”), Kira Kovalenko and Natasha Merkulova with Alexei Chupov will compete for the best directorial work.
Merab Ninidze (“The Case”), Filipp Yankovsky (“Ivan Denisovich”), Yuri Borisov (“Captain Volkonogov fled” and “Compartment number 6”) appear in the nomination “Best Leading Male Role”.
In a similar nomination for actresses – Ksenia Rappoport (“Mom, I’m at Home”), Milana Aguzarova (“Opening Fists”) and Tinatin Dalakishvili (“Medea”).
According to Izvestia columnist and film critic Sergei Sychev, the White Elephant film award currently claims to be the most independent film award in Russia.
“The most important thing in this news is that the White Elephant award is alive and still claims to be one of the most important film awards in the country along with the Golden Eagle and Nika. Many did not believe that it would exist: last year, the Guild of Film Critics and Film Critics of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, which once created the Elephant, announced that it no longer had anything to do with it, and established a new, own award – it was awarded at the end of December 2021 years,” he recalled.
The White Elephant, according to him, is a particularly prestigious film prize, although it does not represent all domestic criticism, but only part of it.
On December 21, it became known that Anton Dyakov’s Russian short cartoon Boxing Ballet was shortlisted for the Oscars. In total, 15 films are presented in the category “Best Animated Short Film”.
Along with this, it became known that the film “Unclenching Fists” could not be among the 15 films that will qualify for an Oscar in the nomination “Best Foreign Language Film”.
