Energy deficit: they warn that 2,500 MW will be missing to cover electricity demand

The lack of supply will affect both families and companies. Reports warn that the infrastructure is insufficient since the Néstor Kirchner Gasduct will operate at half capacity.

They warn that this summer, Argentina will face a serious energy deficit since 2,500 MW will be missing to cover the projected electricity demand. They also maintain that this summer the Néstor Kirchner Gas Pipeline It will operate at half its available capacity.

“This supply problem will affect not only summer 2025, but also the summers of 2026 and 2027if urgent measures are not taken,” they revealed from Encuentro Foundation.

In this regard, they mentioned two reasons why this energy deficit will be generated. The first of them has to do with the fact that when it was carried out the installation of wind and solar parks between 2016 and 2019, “the transmission works (power lines and transformer stations) were not foreseen and carried out”“, they express.

This, they warn, currently prevents the unrestricted evacuation of all the available power of the system at the same time (hydroelectric, wind, solar, etc.) with which as wind and solar energy “it cannot be stored so it must be dispatched and the dispatch of thermal power and the rest available is restricted”they detailed.

The other reason mentioned in the reports has to do with the fact that The Government of Javier Milei annulled the award of 3,000 MW thermal power to natural gas from the TERCONF Program which were assigned in November 2023 of which, it is mentioned, “a part would have entered during this summer and the rest before June 2025.”

“This power It was going to be installed directly at the critical points of the system which, due to the aforementioned restrictions of the transmission system, cannot currently be reached with more energy,” they highlight and add that this decision not only affects this coming summer.

“To this dayor there is a tender for new thermal power or transmission works (transformer lines and stations), so the summers of 2026 and 2027 will also be affected. A work of significant magnitude from its tender to its start-up takes at least 2 years,” they closed.
