Pulmonologist compared the harm from cigarettes and vapes

Electronic nicotine delivery systems are less harmful than conventional cigarettes. This opinion was expressed on Thursday, January 20, by a pulmonologist Vyacheslav Ovechkin. He opposed the initiative to ban the sale of vapes.

“Yes, easy accessibility allows vaping to spread among teenagers, this fact cannot be ignored. But people who have switched to vaping from conventional cigarettes are likely to be forced to return to them, and this is much more harmful. Cigarettes cause lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, lip cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),” a pulmonologist said in an interview with Lenta.Ru.

In Russia, vapes have been equated with cigarettes, but their real harm has not yet been fully assessed, the doctor is sure. Very little research has been done in this area so far.

According to a pulmonologist, there is an EVALI disease associated with damage to the lungs as a result of smoking vapes. It has been registered in the US for several years, however, it is still unclear which component of the smoking device causes it.

“Of course, research is needed. Our health care is not so clear about it. In the United States, 10-50 deaths per year are recorded, but no one prohibits them. We had a case registered in the Morozov clinic, a 17-year-old teenager, he was cured. Not so long ago, there was an acute poisoning with electronic cigarettes with a fatal outcome in Russia, it is no longer registered, ”the doctor noted.

On January 12, the head of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, Dmitry Svishchev, said that the deaths of children from vaping demonstrate that the law equating such electronic devices with cigarettes is not enough, a complete ban is needed, according to aif.ru.

State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev put forward an initiative to introduce criminal penalties for selling vapes to children, RT reports.

Earlier on the same day, the Investigative Committee of the Investigative Committee for the Altai Territory reported that, according to preliminary data, on January 10, her 18-year-old girlfriend and her 12-year-old brother came to visit a 17-year-old resident of Biysk. Teenagers smoked an electronic device, after which their health deteriorated. The girls were hospitalized, but the boy could not be saved.

On January 5, Khamzaev drew attention to the fact that some European countries are working to ban the sale of tobacco products in any of its equivalents to citizens born after 2014. According to him, it is also necessary to completely ban the sale of tobacco to Russians who were born after this period.

Earlier, on December 26, Pavel Korytov, a lawyer at the European Legal Service, recalled that anti-tobacco work in Russia is underway as part of the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. He noted that against the backdrop of already existing bans on advertising, sale and smoking, it is logical to expect a ban on the sale of tobacco to those born in 2015 and later, moreover, after they reach the age of majority.

Korytov also noted that in accordance with the Demography national project in Russia, the number of smokers should be reduced to 10% by 2024, NSN reports.
