Key research for the Size Law: study revealed the average body measurements of Argentines

He aim of the study is the compliance and the basis for the definition of the Single Standard Identification System for Clothing Sizes (SUNITI), established by National Law N°27,521which establishes through body measurements standardized the manufacturing, preparation, marketing and import of clothing.

The research was carried out through a technology of 3D body scanners (3D), included various age groups, socioeconomic groups, and both genders, and managed to capture several body measurements in order to collect data, in 16 provinces and more than 20 cities, between 10 and 15 seconds.

He study It does not only mean a social impact and need, but also the inclusion, adaptation and development sizes for all body types. It is a call to the industry and the textile market, to expand and respect the rules on diversity and the range of body measurements of Argentines.

What results did the study reveal?

The investigation reflected in the data that the argentine women present great differences compared to standardized measures: a average height of 1.61 meterscompared to the 1.70 meters that international brands usually use as a parameter. Regarding other parts of the body, the average measurements are: bust (90-102cm), waist (74-86 cm) and hip (102-105).

Both results show the difference and distance between the average real measurements of the Argentines, compared to the generic sizes that most stores adopt, which can cause difficulty and problems when choosing clothes.

The Law 27,521known as Size Lawwas sanctioned in 2019 and regulated in 2021. It is a regulation that establishes a system for identifying standardized clothing sizes for the Argentine population.

Their main objectives They are: eradicate discrimination against bodies, guarantee the right to clothing for all bodies, promote dignified treatment and non-discriminatory practices towards consumers, and intervene in diseases such as bulimia and anorexia.

The Law establishes that clothing for people over 12 years of age must comply with the Single Standard Identification System for Clothing Sizes. In addition, businesses that sell clothing should comply with the demands to display a poster with the table of standardized measurements, guarantee conditions of equitable attention to consumers, among others.
