As sources in the military department told Izvestia, a new system of protection against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be tested as part of the Allied Resolve-2022 exercises.
The Verba portable anti-aircraft missile system (MANPADS) will be used as the main “tool”. The calculations of these complexes will be distributed over a large area in order to create a protective dome. In addition to intercepting the drones themselves, they will also check the possibility of combating aviation weapons – guided bombs and missiles. Anti-aircraft gunners from the Eastern and Western military districts will be involved in the maneuvers.
At a single day of military acceptance on Thursday, January 20, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko said that in the fourth quarter of last year, the troops received one brigade set of the Verba portable anti-aircraft missile system. In December, the defense department announced that the 1st Guards Tank Army of the Western Military District would switch to new MANPADS in 2022.
According to the developers, the new, much more sensitive homing head has dramatically increased the ability to deal with small objects, such as UAVs. Compared with the anti-aircraft systems of the previous generation, the capabilities of the new missile have doubled, especially at a distance of over 3 km. In addition, they can be linked into a single system with long-range air defense systems and receive external target designation.
MANPADS “Verba” have been in regular service for only a few years and now the army is actively saturating them, military expert Andrei Frolov told Izvestia.
Compared to earlier MANPADS, it is noise-resistant, does not respond to traps – the homing heads of its missiles are more difficult to deceive. They also have higher sensitivity, which allows you to better deal with the same drones. For the transfer of his calculations, vehicles such as Typhoon-Air Defense can be used. They even have a hatch from which you can shoot on the go.
