An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred near the southern Kuriles

According to the Sakhalin Branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on January 21, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred near the southern Kuriles in the Pacific Ocean.

Seismologists reported that tremors were felt at 10:59 local time (2:59 Moscow time). The epicenter of the shock was located 80 km east of the village of Malokurilskoye on Shikotan Island. The focus depth was 58 km.

According to RIA Novosti specialists, the residents of settlements on the islands of Kunashir and Iturup felt the jolt. The perceptibility of the seismic event was from two to three points.

No casualties were reported. At the moment, the task force is inspecting the buildings for possible damage.

Earlier, on January 15, after the eruption of an underwater volcano near the Tonga Islands in the Kuril Islands, a threat of a tsunami up to 3 m high was announced. It was noted that there was no threat to the population and territory of Russia.

On December 21, seismologists registered an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near the Kuril Islands. The tremors were felt by residents of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, as well as the villages of Malokurilskoye and Krabozavodskoye. The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.9. The source was located 35 km southeast of Yuzhno-Kurilsk and occurred at a depth of 100 km.
