Why the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is celebrated

November 25 was chosen as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women because in 1960 the Mirabal sisters, three Dominican activists were murdered for opposing the dictatorial regime of Rafael Trujillo. As a consequence, they have left a legacy that has become a symbol of the fight against gender violence and oppression that women face.
Since 2000, the UN urged all countries to take actions that raise public awareness on this issueremembering that violence against women is a human rights issue that affects the entire society.
