The metrotram of Mendoza, that connects the departments of Maipú and Las Heras, incorporated the first open payments system in the country, allowing users to pay for the ticket with credit or debit cards and also with smart devices, such as watches and smartphones with NFC technology.
The Mendoza administration indicated that, in this initial stage, the user will be able to opt, in addition to the SUBE system, for these means of payment directly on board. In this same sense, passengers will also be able to use smartphone devices or smart watches with NFC technology.
This advance arises through an agreement between the government of Mendoza and the company Open Pass, in charge of the development of digital platforms.
Advance
The Minister of Government, Infrastructure and Territorial Development, Natalio Memareported: “For some time now we have been trying to improve the ticket payment system, after some difficulties with the SUBE system, such as a lack of cards and places to charge as well.”.
“Regarding the opening in this area proposed by the national government, we wanted to be the first to arrive at that solution and that is why we have started with a pilot test of open payments on the Metrotranvía. In principle, there are two pairs authorized to pay with this system, and others will gradually be incorporated,” he added.

It is important to note that those who pay with this method will not yet have the discounts offered by the different benefits.
“Once we leave the pilot test, the idea is to expand it to the rest of the transportation system. At this stage we want to test this new modality and know the user’s response to move forward and for the two systems to coexist,” explained the minister. and added: “We have asked Nación Servicios to extend electronic payment to the rest of the province.”
This implementation, the first to be carried out in an urban passenger transport system throughout the country, allows the possibility of using smartphone devices or smart watches that support NFC technology with tokenized cards, enabled by each issuing bank for this use, with any compatible wallet, such as Gpay, ApplePay and Modo, among others.
Mendoza, pioneer
For its part, Matias Colomborepresentative of Open Pass, pointed out that “Mendoza is one of the pioneers in launching this modality of open payments in public transportation. From Open Pass we have set up two pairs so that Mendoza residents can pay with their contactless card and we also made available the same technology that we are developing today in the Buenos Aires subway.”
The user, when ascending to the Metrotranvía duo, makes the payment at the machine enabled for this case. The validator performs security checks on the payment method presented and enables or rejects access based on the system’s security and operation rules.
In this instance, the system will initially support up to 4 consecutive trips and 10 trips per day. “Banco Nación, as a financial agent, joined this initiative, since Mastercard or Visa debit and credit cards can be used.”
