The troops and forces of the Northern Fleet, together with the Arctic Expeditionary Group, have begun exercises under the leadership of the commander of the Northern Fleet, Hero of Russia, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday, January 26.
“It is planned to involve up to 1,200 personnel, about 140 units of military and special equipment, up to 20 aircraft, up to 30 ships, submarines and support vessels to participate in the exercise,” the ministry said.
The military personnel of the Northern Fleet will have to work out the protection of the communications of the Northern Sea Route, the protection and defense of the garrisons of the Northern Fleet, and conduct exercises to counter imaginary terrorist groups, their blocking and destruction.
The main practical actions of the forces and troops of the Northern Fleet will take place in the waters of the Barents Sea. They will involve the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov, the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, the large landing ship Ivan Gren, submarines, support vessels, aircraft and helicopters of the Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Northern Fleet. In addition to offshore ranges, the exercises will take place at coastal ranges in the Murmansk region.
As the press service of the Northern Fleet specified, the exercises will test the coherence of the actions of tactical groups of ships and vessels, units of coastal troops in the performance of joint training and combat missions in the Arctic. And also tactical techniques, methods of conducting naval combat and military operations in the Arctic region have been worked out.
Twenty ships and vessels of the Baltic Fleet entered the designated areas to practice combat training tasks on January 24. The ships, united in tactical groups, will carry out tasks for anti-submarine and air defense, as well as anti-mine support for the detachments.
On January 20, it became known that more than 140 ships and 60 aircraft will participate in the exercises of the Russian Navy in January-February in all areas of responsibility of the fleets. In addition, it is planned to involve about 10 thousand military personnel in the exercises. A number of exercises will take place in the sea areas adjacent to the territory of Russia. In addition to the Atlantic Ocean, the exercises will be conducted in the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Okhotsk, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
