SME retail sales fell 1.7% year-on-year in November

The SME retail sales fell 1.7% year-on-year in November, at constant prices, and accumulate a decrease of 12.2% in the first eleven months of the year. In the seasonally adjusted monthly comparison, they grew 3.9%.

During November, businesses reported that rreceived price increases from some suppliers and to compensate for them, they implemented promotions that managed to maintain stability in various areas. The observed behavior suggests an end to the year with levels similar to or higher than those of the previous year.

Sector analysis

In November, Five of the seven items surveyed recorded year-on-year declines in sales. The greatest decline was detected in Perfumery (-15.4%), followed by Pharmacies (-10.4%) and Bazaar, decoration, home textiles (-9.4%). On the other hand, Food and Beverages (+4.4%) and Footwear and Leather Goods (+2.6%) rose.

Food and drinks

Sales rose 4.4% year-on-year in November, at constant prices and accumulated a drop of 14.5% in the first eleven months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month comparison, they were 0.1% higher of October.

Bazaar, decoration, home textiles and furniture

Sales fell 9.4% year-on-year, always at constant prices, and amount to a decline of 14.6% in the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. In the inter-monthly contrast they grew 3.4%.

Footwear and leather goods

Sales had an improvement of 2.6% year-on-year, and accumulated a drop of 7.2% until November compared to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month comparison they rose 3.4%.

Pharmacy

Sales decreased 10.4% year-on-year in November, at constant prices, and have fallen 22.1% in the first eleven months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month measurement, they grew 3.2%.

Perfumery

Sales fell 15.4% year-on-year, and until November they registered a decline of 28%, compared to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month contrast, there was an increase of 6.8%.

Hardware, electrical materials and construction materials

Sales declined 2.1% year-on-year in November, at constant prices, and the decline until November reached 13.1% in contrast to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month comparison, they increased 2.5%.

Textile and clothing

Sales decreased 0.8% year-on-year in November, at constant prices and accumulated an increase of 1.4% in the first eleven months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. In the month-on-month comparison, they increased 3%.

Qualitative analysis

The The tax burden continued to be the main problem for businesses in November. Thus, among the main policies they would expect from the government, 66% referred to a reduction in taxes (vs. 68.6% in October).

Beyond tax issues, the demand for measures that strengthen domestic demand with 12.7% of responses (vs. 11.4% the previous month), bureaucratic simplification with 9.8%, and the generation of incentives for hiring personnel (6.4%).
