The HTS leader made a special visit to the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, a sacred site for Islam. The rebel movements continue, having already taken the most important points of Syrian territory.
The leader of the Levant Liberation Organization, Abu Mohammed al Golani, who leads the rebels in the offensive in Syria, visited the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus this Sunday. There he spoke and maintained that the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al Assad represents “a new story for the entire region.”

“This victory is a new story for the entire Islamic umma (nation) and for the entire region. Al Assad has left Syria as an estate for Iranian ambitions, and spread sectarianism and corruption,” al Jolani said in a brief speech inside the mosque.

Syria: Mohammed Al Golani, leader of the rebels after the overthrow of Al Assad, spoke
The visit is a symbolic act that emphasizes the victory of the insurgent alliance, led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS, former affiliate of Al Qaeda) and made up of rebels supported by Türkiye, against the Syrian regime established in 1971 by Hafez al Assad, father of the overthrown president, belonging to the Alawite sect.
“Today Syria has been cleaned, thanks to God and the mujahideen (fighters),” while his followers interrupted him with shouts of “God is great, God is great,” he added.
Al Golani, whose real name is Ahmed al Charaa and who was escorted by armed men, was received by dozens of faithful in an atmosphere of euphoria.
The rebel leader was based in the province of Idlib, in the northwest of the country, where he established the self-proclaimed Salvation Government, as the political branch of the group. Upon arriving in Damascus, he got out of his car to perform a prayer of gratitude to God in the open air.
The Great Umayyad Mosque of Damascus, built between 705 and 715, is one of the most famous Muslim temples, along with the mosques of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, and Al Aqsa in Jerusalem.
The Al Assad regime collapsed this Sunday at the hands of the insurgents, most of them Islamists, led by HTS who took Damascus with little resistance after twelve days of offensive. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Al Assad left the country after holding negotiations with several participants in the armed conflict, but without revealing his whereabouts.
