The Buenos Aires legislator from Unión por la Patria (UP) Viviana Gizzo presented a project with the objective that the Chamber of Deputies declare the toilet of provincial interestwithin the framework of World Toilet Day established by the United Nations for every November 19 under the motto “a place for peace.”
The deputy justified the initiative by specifying that the Sanitation is “a human right” and, furthermore, he pointed out that “Everyone should have access to a safe, hygienic and private toilet that is connected to a safely managed sanitation system to properly dispose of waste.”
“Inadequate, damaged or broken sanitation systems can cause contamination as well as the emergence of diseases that can be fatal,” he added in the text of the proposal and pointed out that “the lack of sanitation, water and Safely managed hygiene practices make women and girls, in particular, more vulnerable to abuse, attacks and poor health, undermining their ability to study, work and live with dignity.
For Gizzo, it is the State that “must resolve the urban housing deficit, at a time when the national government has made the decision not to advance in guaranteeing the constitutional right of access to decent housing for all social sectors.”
In that sense, he recalled that last year, through Resolution 125/2023, the Federal Health Plan My Bathroom “It guaranteed access to sanitation and hygiene services, precarious bathrooms with latrines were renovated and houses with women, girls and boys had priority, but it was currently suspended.”
According to the Peronist deputy, for the World Toilet Day 2024they established three lines action. The first indicates that “the toilet is a place for peace” because this essential space, “at the center of our lives, should be safe and not pose a risk” since “the sanitation of billions of people is danger from conflict, climate change, disasters and lack of care.
At the same time, it was determined that “the toilet is a place of protection” since “by isolating waste, sanitation is crucial for public and environmental health” since “inadequate, damaged or broken sanitation systems cause contamination and the proliferation of deadly diseases.
And finally, it was suggested that “the toilet is a place for progress”because “sanitation is a human right that protects the dignity and transforms the lives of women and girls in particular” since “more investment and better management of sanitation are key to a more just and peaceful world.”
The legislator recalled that this year’s UN campaign “urges governments to ensure that sanitation and water supply services are resilient, effective and accessible to the entire population.”
